The Centre for Syrian Studies (CSS) at the University of St Andrews became the world’s first research centre on Syria when it was formally launched on November 3, 2006. The primary objectives of the CSS are:

  • To conduct high quality, independent, objective research on Syria.
  • To provide quality graduate education in the UK on Syria for UK students and for talented young Syrians, accepted on merit.
  • To promote research that will help Syrians advance a transition to a more peaceful, politically inclusive Syria.

The CSS is a unit of the:

Institute for Middle East, Central Asian, and Caucasus Studies

The Asfari Foundation,  a registered British charity is the founding and primary donor to the Centre of Syrian Studies at the University of St Andrews, and it is through its generous contributions that many of its activities, including this website, are made possible.
